Technical Leadership for Your Organization

Stucco Software provides fractional engineering management, specialist advisory, and hands-on development on monthly retainers or by the day.

We work with non-technical founders, established organizations, and engineering teams that need extra senior capacity.

Consulting revenue sustains Stucco Software's public-good work on Brolly and open standards. Every engagement helps fund the nonprofit side of the studio.

If you're running an organization without in-house engineering leadership like a newsroom, a member-owned club, a small business, or you're a founder without an engineering background, we act as your senior technical voice. We translate between product goals and engineering reality, and we stay close to the work.

If you're a CTO, Head of Engineering, or founding engineer, we step in where you need extra senior capacity: coaching a newly-promoted lead, running a team through a rough patch, or bringing specialist depth in data systems and product development.

What Stucco Software Does

Engineering Management

Lead software development projects end-to-end. We scope the work, plan releases, run a team, make technical calls, and get the thing shipped.

Specialist Advisory

Bring senior depth to a specific area: data architecture, design systems, product development, and technical strategy.

Hands-on-keyboard Contributions

Scoped development work, billed at day rate that you decide. Our work is value-based and completely transparent.

Transparency And Rates

Our rates are public. We price on value, not hours, and we refund the remainder of any contract we finish early.

Use our rate calculator to tell us how much a days work should cost:

You'll work with person from Stucco Software, with a salary of $ . Adding an overhead and profit of $42,880, our gross income target per year is $198,880.
? (For each member of our team, we pay % employment tax, and provide a % 401k match. Additionally, we pay $ in health insurance premiums, and contribute $ to their HSA account. We aim for a % profit margin to help Stucco remain healthy and sustainable.)

We are able to sell & schedule days of work per year per team member 1, working days per week. So, 1 person working 215 days, targeting a gross income of $198,880, means billing at $925 per day.

A big project for us is about days and takes in $55,500. With 1 people on the project, this puts the calendar time at about 12 weeks. 2

This is a price!

  1. 215 days comes from some rough math around PTO days, sick days, and holidays. We can count 5 days per week. Subtract 25 days of PTO (5 weeks), maybe 10 ish days for holidays (2 weeks) and 10 days (2 weeks) of sick, unsold, or pro-bono work that leaves 43 weeks of billable time per year to cover the whole year. 40 weeks times 5 days per week is 215 days.
  2. This relationship is only so linear. Adding more people doesn't always mean the work gets done faster, and there might end up being blocks of calendar time where we're not working to give you time to review and request changes.

Who We've Worked With

Recent engagements include the Wilamette Week, the Multnomah Athletic Club, Bletchley Park, Prospitallity, Windsock.ai, Verbatim Quarterly and other early-stage founders working without an in-house engineering lead.
